Entanglement | Gisele Gatera

I always thought hurt went both ways,
But you’re so ironically perfect
While breaking the heart you once mended.
I now cloak myself with the uncanny night,
As I break in silence,
Doubt and hope filling the space you left hopelessly empty

Nonchalance worn like an armour masks the pain from daylight,
Mirrors of our souls skimming past each other—initiated small talks,
Meaningless hi’s and hallow hello’s

One claims honesty, the other grips pride,
Feelings too raw to be uttered,
Wounds too fresh to be claimed as scars

It is change that I loathe and the silence that shadows it,
Masked by growing up, we pretend we weren’t meant to be,
That our souls never found each other,
Yet in darkness you illuminated the light.

You haunt me
Like a ghost of a loved one etched into a happy-sad memory,
I find myself reminiscing in the plans, the plays,
The laughter that lingers like the aroma of missed goodbye,
A scent of bittersweet poison,
You tug at my composure, unravelling me in nothing but silence.
I always knew I’d hurt more.
