This Milestone: An Editorial | Sandra Nadege

Greetings from the land of a thousand hills,

Welcome to the third issue of Umukarago. This milestone marks our first themed edition. It focuses on remembrance, peace, unity, hope, and resilience, reflecting Rwanda’s journey over the past 30 years.

This edition carries special significance as we commemorate the lives lost and honor the resilience of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Our contributors have approached these themes with sensitivity, depth, and a commitment to truth and healing. This collection features new voices, with approximately 80 per cent being newly published writers, offering you fresh perspectives and stories.

For the first time, we are also featuring children’s literature, symbolising the continuation of our journey and the importance of instilling these profound themes in the next generation.

As you immerse yourself in this issue, we hope you find moments of reflection and connection. May the poetry touch your soul and the stories ignite renewed hope and unity. I extend my deepest gratitude to our contributors for their powerful works and to our readers for their continued support.

Umukarago remains dedicated to showcasing clever, fearless, innovative, and deeply meaningful works. We hope this issue and those to come will leave an indelible mark on your hearts and minds.
